聞く：三国志
This drama is a Japanese dubbing of a 2010 Chinese TV adaptation of the classic 14th century novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I finished watching the original Chinese dub sometime last semester, so I was pleased to find that there was also a Japanese version I could study for the rest of the quarantine. This particular video clip covers scenes from episodes 3 and 4 when Liu Bei and his sworn brothers join Yuan Shao's alliance against the tyrannous prime minister Dong Zhuo.
Having watched the episode almost a year ago did not help me as much as I thought it would. Much like the Nobunaga NHK drama I posted before, the older style spoken here is very difficult to understand, especially since many words and names are being imported from Chinese. Also, I could tell that the Japanese subtitles didn't quite match what the characters were actually saying, but there were still a few lines whose meanings I could reasonably guess. At 2:10, Zhang Fei gives his brother an ultimatum, saying, "行くなら、一つだけ." At 5:43, Cao Cao recalls, "私も無名であった," so I looked up the last word and found out that である is a literary or old form of the copula だ.
As far as old grammar goes, there was a purpose clause at 29:57 but with 来る instead of 行く: "劉将軍に会いに来た," and a noun-modifying clause at 7:24: "門の前で会った者たちです." As regards new grammar, I made sure to listen for 思います and thus noticed the subtitles at 29:04 reading, "私が一番何に驚いたと思う?" In class, we learned to say "私もそう思います," and at 33:06 I found that phrase's opposite when Cao Cao and Liu Bei are debating the state of the realm: "私はそう思わない."
