This documentary tells the history of the Japanese sister battleships Yamato and Musashi during the Second World War with a focus on the former as the latter is sunk relatively early in the war.  I find it interesting to hear dates in Japanese or anything else involving numbers because I feel like I hear and understand the numbers as they are spoken, but at the end I realize I did not catch any of what was said. For instance, near the start of the video, the narrator recalls that the attack on Pearl Harbor was 「昭和十六年十二月八日」, and as I listened, I thought, "yes, I know all of these words," but I had to pause the video and slowly put the numbers together to get December 8, 1941 (I also realized the Japanese date Pearl Harbor to Dec. 8 instead of 7).

 I have written a blog post about the main series "Legend of the Galactic Heroes" before, but I had not yet seen this film, which is a more detailed retelling of the content featured in the first two episodes of the original series. In the far future when humanity has colonized the Milky Way galaxy, the two remaining nation-states in existence, the Galactic Empire and Free Planets Alliance, have been locked in war for almost 150 years. "Overture to a New War" tells the story of the Battle of Astarte, in which the Imperial Fleet under High Admiral Reinhart von Lohengramm inflicts heavy casualties on the Alliance Fleet under Commodore Yang Wen-li (who takes command only after his superior is gravely wounded) but is ultimately forced to withdraw.  I watched a clip from the NHK drama "Hojo Tokimune" showcasing the Mongol invasions of Japan in 1274 and 1281 during the reign of the Kamakura shogunate. At the time of the first invasion, as the drama shows very clearly, Japan was not prepared to endure such an assault as the Mongols made. The invaders bring with them unfamiliar weapons such as trebuchets and exploding canister ammunition, and they also do not share the same concerns for honor in battle as the Japanese do and use poisonous arrows. However, when the second invasion comes, the samurai have become familiar with the Mongol way of war and construct a massive stone wall to keep the enemy at bay on the beach. Unfortunately, since the characters speak an imitation of thirteenth century Japanese, I could scarcely begin to understand their speech. However, in battle single word commands are common, and I could identify the regular form of imperative verbs; in particular, the imperative of する is しろ .

  高校の時、ボーイスカウトとして、グレイシャー国立公園（こくりつこうえん）への旅行に行きました。それは大丈夫だったけど、モンタナ州からもどってかえるのは大変でした。まず、私たちは帰りのための電車に石油流出（せきゆりゅうしゅつ）をはねられたので、線路（せんろ）は洗われた後まで待ってしまいました。それから、線路に油がまだあったから、電車はふつうな速度にしてはだめなんでした。とても遅くシカゴに着いたし、つぎの電車は乗りかえられませんでした。私たちはホテルに泊まればよかったと思っていましたが、大人の隊長はバスで帰らなければならなかったと言ってしまったので、泊まらないで旅行を続けました。でも、テネシーとミシシッピの州境（しゅうきょう）でバスはこわれてしまいました。 1 時間半新しいのを待って乗り換えてから、そのバスのエアコンもこわれたんでした。夏でした。気温が 100 度で、ジャクソンまではもう１つの 3 時間かかりました。遂に着いたら、私たちはみんな死んでいる人のようにつかれたんです。 （話の電車じゃありませんが、同じ「エンパイア・ビルダー」というせんです）

  中学校の二年生の時、たつまきが起きました。ミシシッピ州には、たつまきの災害は少なくないけど、起きたら、あまりひどくなくて、こわくないです。でもその日、風がとても強くふいていて、大雨もふっていたから、シェルターににげなければならなくなりました。 100 人の学生と先生と一緒に男のトイレで三時間ぐらい待ちました。本当に最悪でした。だれか学生は「トイレを使ってもいいんだろう」と考えてそうして、私たちは耐えることから何も出来ませんでした。忘れることも出来ません。
