きくしゅくだい: 銀河英雄伝説




Legend of the Galactic Heroes (銀河英雄伝説(ぎんがえいゆうでんせつ)) is a space opera 110 episodes long about the fortunes of two soldiers, each serving one of the two warring states that have colonized the galaxy by the year AD 3600. Yang Wen-li, who had enrolled in the army college only to study history for free, is a commodore in the Free Planets Alliance fleet, and Reinhard von Lohengramm, whose sister was abducted for the Kaiser's harem, is an admiral in the Galactic Imperial fleet. These two nations, one democratic and the other autocratic, have thus far a 150-year long war, but Yang and Lohengramm may see the war's end, perhaps even by their own hands.
As I watched the entire show, I was able to recognize several phrases that were repeated very often. I noticed that many ordinal numbers are formed by 第(だい)# (e.g. 第(だい)13(じゅうさん)艦隊(かんたい) means 13th Fleet).  Given the show's setting, I learned many military terms and governmental honorifics and titles, such as 艦隊(かんたい)、戦艦(せんかん)、提督(ていとく)、閣下(かっか)、国防(こくぼう)、院長(いんちょう)、長官(ちょうかん)、連合艦隊司令長官(れんごうかんたいしれいちょうかん)。

聞く：戦艦大和

This documentary tells the history of the Japanese sister battleships Yamato and Musashi during the Second World War with a focus on the former as the latter is sunk relatively early in the war.  I find it interesting to hear dates in Japanese or anything else involving numbers because I feel like I hear and understand the numbers as they are spoken, but at the end I realize I did not catch any of what was said. For instance, near the start of the video, the narrator recalls that the attack on Pearl Harbor was 「昭和十六年十二月八日」, and as I listened, I thought, "yes, I know all of these words," but I had to pause the video and slowly put the numbers together to get December 8, 1941 (I also realized the Japanese date Pearl Harbor to Dec. 8 instead of 7).

聞く：キング・オブ・ザ・ヒル

 I have never actually watched King of the Hill, but I know enough about it to find a Japanese dubbing hilarious. The show is a slice of life comedy about the Hill family, who live in a small town in Texas. In this clip, Hank Hill, the main character, is teaching his son Bobby that smoking tobacco is wrong by forcing him to smoke dozens of packs of cigarettes, which results in Bobby learning his lesson and vomiting. I could understand much of what was said, but I do not think I could rewrite the script from listening to the video; their casual speech is too syncopated. It was interesting to see how both father and son use extremely casual forms with each other and to see 「いいか？」translated in at least three different ways. Also I noticed 「えんぴつ」was translated not as "pencil" but as "dowel," a strange complication as seems common when subtitling Japanese programming (I have never heard the word "jalopy" once in my life, but anime translators have some aversion...
